As a result of the emergency service suppression efforts and calmer weather conditions over recent days, PWS can advise the following changes to track openings and closures.More

Track closure update - Sat 26 Jan 2019, 9am

PWS staff have completed assessment of each site previously closed yesterday (Friday 25 Jan) due to the high fire risk.  


As a result of this assessment, the following locations will be re-opened and access available from 9:30am today (Saturday 26 January 2019).


Tasman National Park



  • Wughalee Campground

  • Bare Knoll Campground

  • Old Cape Pillar Track

  • Waterfall Bay Tracks (including Canoe Bay, Bivouac Bay and Tasman Trail

  • Crescent Bay Track

  • Mount Brown Track

  • Cape Raoul Track

  • Shipstern Bluff Track

  • Tunnel Bay Track


Freycinet National Park



  • Wineglass Bay Lookout & Wineglass Beach

  • Mt Amos

  • Hazards Beach & peninsula walking tracks

  • Isthmus Track

  • South Friendly 4WD Track (the track to Freshwater Lagoon and Frank’s Camp)


Douglas Apsley National Park



  • Douglas Apsley Gorge Track

  • Leeaberra Track


Due to the continued fire threat from the Gell River Fire, the Mt Field National Park will remain closed for today (Saturday 26 January 2019). PWS will re-assess the situation and provide an update tomorrow (Sunday 27 January 2019).


Hastings Caves and Thermal Pools will re-open for business at 9am Sunday 27 January 2019.


The following sites are still being assessed by staff and PWS will provide an update as soon as possible.


Echo Sugarloaf State Reserve

Snug Tiers Nature Recreation Area



  • Snug Falls Track

  • Pelverata Falls Track

  • Umfrevilles Track


Esperance River Conservation Area



  • Esperance River campground and day visitor area

As fires under hot, dry and windy conditions can travel very fast, it’s important for visitors to stay informed in case conditions change.


PWS would like to remind everyone that with the large amount of fires burning and the potential for spotting and new starts due to the weather forecast, we are asking people NOT to venture into remote areas from now until the end of the long weekend (Tuesday 29 January 2019).
