Upgraded helipads improve safety for the Overland Track

29/09/2016

The Tasmanian Air Rescue Trust has provided funding to enable the upgrading of helipads on the Overland Track, improving the ability of rescue teams to reach walkers and staff in case of emergency.

Parks and Wildlife Service acting Northwest Region manager Brendon Clark said that helicopters are a lifeline for the Overland Track.

"In a remote area with no road access, we rely on helicopters for delivering supplies and for search and rescue operations. Each overnight hut has a helipad and keeping those in good condition is important for the safety of the helicopter pilots as part of search and rescue operations," Mr Clark said.

Funding for the construction of five replacement helipads on the Overland Track was provided by the Tasmanian Air Rescue Trust. Parks staff and building contractors constructed replacement pads at Windermere, Pelion, Kia Ora, Windy Ridge and Pine Valley. The upgrades were necessary to provide a safe working load of 5 tons, along with safer approach and departure boardwalks.
