Macquarie Harbour whale rescue attempt postponed

Deteriorating weather has postponed today’s attempts to refloat the only surviving sperm whale stranded in Macquarie Harbour.

The 12 metre whale has been “parked” on Fraser Flats just inside the harbor entrance and will be monitored until weather conditions are reassessed tomorrow.

Incident controller Chris Arthur, from the Parks and Wildlife Service, said the safety of rescue crews and animal was paramount.

“We were aware we had only a small weather window to work in today and, as forecast, the strong winds and high seas have interrupted our attempts,” Mr Arthur said.

“Despite the Tassal and Petuna fish farms reorganising their schedules to provide extra vessels today, the on-water crews have not been able to make headway in increasingly adverse sea and wind conditions.

“It is simply too dangerous for the animal and for our crews to be on the water at present.”

Mr Arthur said a second sperm whale trapped in the harbor died overnight and the carcass would remain near Fraser Flats where nature would take its course.
