Whale strandings at Stanley

A number of pilot whales have died in a mass stranding at Stanley on Tasmania's north-west coast.

The Parks and Wildlife Service's Parks and Reserves West Coast manager, Chris Arthur, said a member of the public alerted authorities to the stranding on Anthony's Beach at the western inlet late this morning.

Mr Arthur said it was not known how many whales had been stranded.

"At this stage we know some animals have died and there are some still alive," Mr Arthur said.

"We have a team of 14 Parks and Wildlife Service and Department of Primary Industries and Water staff who have headed for Stanley.

"Our aim is to stabilise the animals this evening.

"At high water tomorrow morning we will attempt to rescue the animals.

"We have equipment and whale rescue trailers coming from around the State.

"We would ask the public to stay away from the area because of safety concerns."

Mr Arthur said whale strandings were not uncommon in Tasmania but important information was obtained from each stranding.

In March 2007, three sperm whales died after a stranding at Macquarie Heads at Strahan.
