The track is designed to take you near to the edge.
Rather than provide artificial barriers, the track construction uses natural features, such as large boulders, to reduce exposure. Regardless, the views from the track showcase the coastal cliffs without needing to test your nerves.
We recommend that you, stay back at least 2 metres from the edge. There are a number of constructed safe viewing points located a safe distance back from the cliff edges that provide the best views.
While there are no barriers to prevent you wandering off the track, we recommend you do not, as the edges are not necessarily safe and may expose you to dangerous fall risks.
Is the track suitable for children?
The lighter pack weights and achievable daily distances can make the track a suitable introduction to overnight walking for children. However, Three Capes Track is still a committed walk in a remote location with no vehicle access. It is highly recommended that you study the daily walking lengths to ensure your family is capable of completing the walk.
The guidebook issued at check-in introduces stories along the track, many with an artful story seat for you to rest at. Many parents who've walked the track with children found them perfect for breaking each day's walk into shorter sections. Children (under 18) must be accompanied by an adult.
The Track is generally not suited for kids and infants under the age of 5. To help you decide whether the walk will be suitable for your children please read our FAQ’s,
Walk Notes and
Plan Your Trip pages.
The approval of a reservation with an infant is subject to availability and our approval. If you are requesting to book with an infant, please contact the Three Capes Track team by emailing us threecapestrack@parks.tas.gov.au or calling 1300 827 727 to confirm availability.
Are Educational Groups able to book?
Yes. Your group will be sharing facilities with all other walkers as there are no separate facilities dedicated to your group apart from your allocated bunk rooms. Consideration of hiker etiquette should be followed to limit impacts that larger groups have on individual walkers.
With high quality track and cabin accommodation, lighter pack weights, and rich interpretative stories, we think Three Capes Track is well suited for Educational Groups. If you wish to make an Education group booking, please read and complete the
registration form.

What facilities are provided?

Gas cooktops, saucepans, frying pans and kettles in the shared kitchen (no microwave ovens or fridge)
Cooking utensils. (Bring your own knives, forks, spoons, cup, plate, bowl)

Shared USB Charging stations (5 volt) for your mobile devices
Heating and lights in the social hub
Toilets with handwash basins
2 outdoor showers (at Munro cabin only)

Is there water available along the track?
Rainwater is available from tanks at each cabin. We recommend you carry two litres per day and treat the water before using it.
What are the sleeping cabins like?
At each site, there are two separate sleeping cabins linked by a timber deck. The cabins sleep 48 in total in a co-share arrangement, with 6 rooms configured for 4 walkers and 3 rooms configured for 8 walkers. The 8-walker rooms include a partial wall, effectively making two smaller rooms for four walkers. Each walker has their own bunk bed with a single mattress (203cm x 90cm). These rooms have no heating or lights, don't forget your sleeping bag and head torch! Here's a
sneak peek.
Can I share a room with my friends/family?
The Host Ranger at each site has a list of arriving walkers, and will make their best effort to put people on the same booking in the same room.
If you are travelling with friends or family who are making separate bookings, you must use the comments box so that we can identify you as a group and allocate the appropriate sized room. Enter a group name (e.g. ABC Club - 6 persons) or enter all name/s of your friends/family.
Can I stay more than one night at one cabin site?
The 4 day/3 night walk has been designed with comfort in mind. Tempted to move permanently into Munro cabin or hightail the 48 kilometres in record speed? Neither are possible - we've crafted your journey across four days to be safe, un-crowded and above all, a joy. You'll spend the first night at Surveyors Cove, the second at Munro and the third at Retakunna Creek. Rooms are allocated by a Host Ranger, who will be available to answer any questions you might have.
Is there mobile phone reception on the track?
Mobile reception is available on the first two days, partially on day three and across most locations on day four. There is reception at Surveyors and Retakunna, and limited reception at Munro cabin. Not all mobile phone providers offer service in the region so check with your provider before departing. Shared phone/tablet charging ports are available in each of the cabins.
Should I bring my bathers?
Yes, what better way to experience nature than swimming in the pristine waters at Denmans Cove and celebrate reaching your destination with a dip in the clear blue waters of Fortescue Bay.
Is there parking available?
Yes. You can park your car, caravan or campervan in the long-term carpark, which is signposted for Three Capes Track walkers, within the Port Arthur Historic Site.
This carpark is approximately 500m walk to the Visitor Centre. You will need to advise staff of your vehicle registration number upon check in.
Is winter a good time to walk?
Yes - expect atmospheric skies, bracing winds, cold nights, and of course some rain (you may even be treated to an amazing aurora!). To find out more about the winter conditions, please refer to the
Tasman Island climate data.
The cabins where you socialise are heated, so you can relax in warmth in the evenings. The sleeping rooms are well insulated and comfortable however they are unheated. We recommend a sleeping bag rated to -5C or less.
Make sure you're well prepared to cope with wind chill in exposed areas. Be sure to double-check the packing list before you leave home!
Where do I check-in?
The designated Three Capes Track walker check-in room is located downstairs, in the Port Arthur Historic Site Visitor Centre. Port Arthur staff will be on hand to assist you to find your way and make the most of your time at Port Arthur.
Please bring your Three Capes Track Booking Receipt. If you have booked a concession fare, your valid Australian Government issued concession card will be required to verify your booking.
Can I store my luggage?
Luggage can be stored in either the luggage storeroom or a personal locker. Both options are available for either short-term storage (i.e. while you explore the Historic Site before your boat departs) or for the four days while you are on the Three Capes Track.
The luggage store for larger items (suitcases, 60L packs or larger), is only accessible in the presence of staff, to ensure security of luggage items. Walkers will be given a luggage tag to write their contact details on, which will help the staff to retrieve their luggage. There is no bike storage available at the Port Arthur Historic Site.
Can I walk Cape Raoul as part of the Three Capes Track?
Your Three Capes Track pass includes entry to the Tasman National Park for the duration of the walk and 24 hours before or after it.
The Cape Raoul Track has been upgraded and we welcome you to walk it as a day walk either before or after your Three Capes Track Experience. We would also recommend a visit to Remarkable Cave and Crescent Bay/Mt Brown day walk.
Can I alter my travel date?
If for some reason you can't make the date you have booked, you can change it. This, of course, is subject to availability. There is no cost if you notify us more than three days from your start date but you may incur a fee if you provide us less than three days notice. Please refer to section 3.1 of the
