    Grade 4: Bushwalking experience recommended. Tracks may be long, rough and very steep. Directional signage may be limited.
    The first 1.5km of the track follows a road to a telecommunications tower. Be aware that there might be service vehicles using this track.

    If you are interested in a short, challenging but rewarding walk, then the Mount Claude Lookout is for you!

    From the carpark, walk past the gate and you will stretch out your legs while you quickly gain 240m of elevation. Enjoy the diverse vegetation. The flowering shrubs spring to life during the warmer months and you'll be surrounded by small native flowers.

    The road leads to a telecommunications tower; and from here, you follow the sign pointing to the track.

    By this stage most of the hard work has been done and the walk becomes easier. Look for the glimpses of the mountains on the horizon, visible in clear weather. The lookout is only 1km from the telecommunications tower and the junction is signed.

    Once you reach the junction, follow the sign for another steep, but thankfully short, walk to the lookout.

    From here, it is not only the view that is spectacular, but also the surrounding rock formations. Explore the details of the 'Roland Conglomerate' geology, down to the small plants that have managed to find footholds within the rock.​

    The track continues past the lookout turnoff to traverse the entire range. This track can be followed towards the summits of Mount Claude, Vandyke and Roland. Parts of this track can become difficult and require navigation and boulder scrambling. 

    Please note that there is no sign indicating the summit of Mount Claude​.

      ​The Mount Claude w​alking track is located approximately 20 minutes to the south of Sheffield. From Sheffield, follow Claude Road (C136) for 18km, before turning left onto Olivers Road (C138) for a further 3km to the Round Mountain Lookout.

      There is parking available and the track starts on a gated 4WD track.​

      Where possible, please avoid driving in our reserves at night. You are sharing the roads with our native wildlife, so take it slow and watch out for animals on the road.

      ​There are no facilities located at the trail head.

      The closest toilets and picnic facilities are located in Gowrie Park which is 7km away.

       Campfires, dogs and bikes are not permitted.​

      ​​​​​Walker safety - alpine walks ​​​​​​ (such as Cradle Mountain, Frenchmans Cap, Walls of Jerusalem, Southwest)

      Weather conditions in Tasmania can change quickly and frequently, especially in alpine areas. Snow, rain, wind and sun are all possible at any time of the year, and bushfires can occur between October and March. 

      When visiting alpine areas you should include at a minimum, in addition to your basic walking gear, a waterproof jacket with hood and storm front (seam sealed and breathable fabric, Gore-Tex or similar), waterproof over trousers (seam sealed and breathable fabric​​, Gore-Tex or similar), sturdy walking boots and warm clothing (a fleece or woollen jumper, thermal base layers, hat and gloves).

      Deaths have occurred when people have been caught unprepared in cold, wet and windy weather. Children, older people and those with an illness or disability are at the greatest risk in such conditions.

      Walker safety - day walks​

      ​Even for a short walk on a fine day, carry a light pack with a weatherproof jacket, warm hat, water (1 litre per person for every 3 hours of walking), some high energy food and a first aid kit that includes an emergency space blanket. At the same time, be prepared for bright sunshine—carry a sunhat, sunglasses, sunscreen. Insect repellent can also make your walk more comfortable and be sure to take a rubbish bag and carry your rubbish out with you.

      If your mobile phone has a signal t​​ake it with you. Limit use of your phone to conserve the battery. If your short walk takes you into very remote areas it would be wise to pack extra food and an emergency shelter or tent.
