Mount Gnomon provides the opportunity for a short, but steep adventure up a mountain peak close to Penguin. Starting from the Gnomon carpark, the track weaves between dry and wet eucalypt forests, providing diversity in the surrounding vegetation, while you steadily climb an elevation of 200m.
Towards the summit, you reach a junction and are provided with two options.
For a more technical walk involving a short boulder scramble, follow the track signposted to Mount Gnomon. Alternatively for an easier option, follow the track to Mount Dial for a further 150m until another sign-posted intersection (to the right) and follow the contours around to the summit.
Whichever choice of route you make, you will soon meet an exposed cliff edge with a sheer drop that provides fantastic views over the southern Dial Range and towards Mount Roland to the south-east.
Beware if you have children with you, as there is no fencing before you reach the sheer drop.
This walk can be combined with the walk to the summit of Mount Duncan or Mount Dial, as they all start from the same carpark.
The track climbs approximately 200m elevation over a distance of 1km and takes an hour return.
