Mount Dial
Mount Dial is located towards the centre of the Dial Range. A network of walking tracks offer multiple possible routes, depending on available time and walking experience.
See the impact of past bushfires in this region, by the affects on the vegetation growth and look for hollows amongst the trees that provide
habitat for a variety of
birds and small mammals.
Follow the ridgeline to explore the geology that is derived mostly from Duncan conglomerate. Search for orchids along the track at higher elevation, as you approach the summit.
A picnic shelter and public facilities can be found in the Ferndene State Reserve.
Tracks to the summit
Mount Dial can be reached via three routes. Each of these offer a different experience of the range.
Route 1: Start at Mount Montgomery Carpark
Begin on the Myrtle Creek Track that leads to Mount Montgomery and walk approximately a kilometre along this track until you reach a signed intersection. Follow the sign for 'All Other Tracks' and continue along the ridgeline for another 2.5km until you reach the summit of Mt Dial. This route is approximately a 4-5 hour return walk (8.2km return, Grade 3).
Route 2: Start at the Ferndene State Reserve.
Continue past the track to Thorsbys Tunnel and meander along the contours, with a gentle incline for the first 2km. The walk becomes steeper closer to the summit. This route climbs approximately 400m elevation over a distance of 3.8km. Allow approximately 4-5 hours for the return walk (7.5km return, Grade 4).
Please note: This is the most difficult option, as the track has minimal maintenance.
Route 3: Start at the Gnomon Carpark.
Use the track to Mount Gnomon Lookout, continue past the turn-off to the lookout and follow the signs for an additional kilometre to Mount Dial. This route is approximately a two hour return walk (4.2km return, Grade 3).
