About the Project
A Recreation Zone Plan (Plan) will be prepared for the
Overland Track. It will provide specific guidance and priorities for on-ground management of the Overland Track for the next ten years. This may include management strategies and visitor management tools designed to balance the visitor experience and protect the natural and cultural values.
PWS will soon seek feedback on the values, visitor experience and future management of the Overland Track, including:
- accommodation nodes
- associated side tracks.
Comments may include elements that should remain, change or be improved.
Consultation
The development of the Plan will include two rounds of community and stakeholder engagement.
Stage 1
- Release of the Background Report. This document will include:
- the current management of the track,
- known values
- and issues associated with the Overland Track.
- Feedback will be sought to help form the development of the draft Plan, using the Background Report to inform this feedback.
- Stage one is expected to occur in mid to late 2026.
Stage 2
- Release of the Draft Recreation Zone Plan for feedback.
Location
The Overland Track is in the Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park. It is also part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (TWWHA). This area is highly significant for its outstanding cultural and natural heritage.
The Overland Track provides an opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the Tasmanian wilderness.
There are booking systems in place for walking independently or with a commercial guiding company.
The Overland Track is an 80km long walking track (or 62km if utilising the ferry at Lake St Clair) that often takes six days and five nights.
