Edge of the World Revitalisation Project

​​​​​The Edge of the World is an important Tasmanian visitor destination to experience the natural and Aboriginal cultural values of the windswept North West coast. The visitor infrastructure has reached the end of its life and is in a sensitive area of coastline. 

The Tasmanian Government has committed $2.75 million to: 

  • create improvements, revitalise and reimagine the site

  • provide a high quality, safe and enjoyable visitor experience for locals and tourists

  • protect important Aboriginal cultural heritage and natural values

Location​​

The Edge of the World is located at the mouth of the Arthur River in the  Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area, and Western Tasmania Aboriginal Cultural Landscape​. The area is significant as it protects the record of way of life of Tasmania Aboriginal people travelling through and living in the same huts year after year. The cultural landscape holds deep connections for the Tasmanian Aboriginal community. 

The area has the cleanest air in the world because of its connection to the longest, uninterrupted expanse of ocean on the globe from Argentina to Tasmania.

Project stages

The project is in the planning phase involving: 

  • site, cultural and environmental assessments

  • concept design

  • engagement with the Tasmanian Aboriginal community, local residents and stakeholders. 

The next steps will include: 

  • design and engineering

  • detailed assessment, approvals and consultation

  • implementation (construction and rehabilitation). 

This project will take 3 years to complete.  It is expected to be completed in 2027.
