The Tamar Island Wetlands Centre is inviting the community to participate in a number of fun, educational activities including a photography competition and scavenger hunt to mark World Wetlands Day 2021 this February.
The annual day on 2 February aims to raise global awareness about the importance of wetlands for people and the planet. This year’s theme, ‘Wetlands and water’, shines a spotlight on wetlands as a source of freshwater and encourages actions to restore and stop the loss of wetlands.
Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service Regional Manger Donna Stanley said visitors are encouraged to showcase their photography skills using the wetlands which is a haven for many species of birds, mammals, reptiles, frogs, fish and invertebrate as their backdrop and inspiration for the photography competition.
A scavenger hunt through the wetlands and colouring-in competition will also provide a fun experience during the month-long event.
Ms Stanley said the activities replace the previous annual event at the Tamar Wetlands Centre to mark World Wetlands Day, which attracted hundreds of visitors to the centre on the one day.
“Due to limited space at the centre and the current COVID-19 restrictions, the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service determined it was not possible to hold the event in the same format to ensure the health and safety of visitors, volunteers and staff.
“I look forward to seeing the Tamar Islands Wetlands Centre creatively captured for the photography competition with the unique estuarine wetland ecosystem of mudflats, lagoons and islands filled with abundant plant and animal life, bound to provide inspiration for young and old,” Ms Stanley said.
“And while you are at the centre finding the perfect shot, why not go on the scavenger hunt, or enjoy one of the other fun activities on offer.”
