Public access to Pioneer Lake in North-East Tasmania has been restored following the successful decommissioning of Pioneer Dam.
The Pioneer Dam structure was built more than a century ago to support historic mining activities in the region. Detailed engineering and environmental assessments identified safety risks associated with the ageing structure that required action.
Decommissioning the dam addressed those risks, ensuring the long-term safety and sustainability of the area so it can be enjoyed by the community for generations to come.
Pioneer Lake is one of North-East Tasmania’s most popular trout fisheries, located about 15 kilometres from Derby.
In preparation for the reopening, the lake has been stocked with rainbow trout ensuring the fishery is ready to provide excellent fishing opportunities from day one.
With the works now complete, visitors can once again enjoy Pioneer Lake and the surrounding environment.
Site inspections and monitoring will continue over the coming months as part of the rehabilitation and revegetation program.
