Marine conservation experts mapped out a rescue response on Monday 21 September in relation to a mass whale stranding on Tasmania’s west coast.

An estimated 270 pilot whales are believed to have stranded at Strahan, with 200 stranded on a sandbar off the Macquarie Heads boat ramp, another 30 several hundred metres away on another sandbar, and about 30 more along Ocean Beach.

Whale strandings are not uncommon in Tasmania. Whale strandings of this scale are not unusual either, however, there has not been one of this level for the past decade.
