After the success of last year's program, the Ranger Exchange is back again this year providing another exciting opportunity for a Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) staff member.
This year PWS Field Officer Michelle Cronly will take part in the Ranger Exchange program with the National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia, swapping the picturesque Great Western Tiers with the Flinders and South Australian Outback region.
The program provides an opportunity to share knowledge and resources across different states, as well as the chance for staff to further develop skills and learn about other areas of Australia's unique landscape.
PWS Great Western Tiers Field Officer Michelle Cronly said she was inspired to throw her hat into the ring for the program after hearing stories from last year's participant.

“I've always been captivated by Australia's wild, remote outback – the endless landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and unique geomorphology and wildlife. The opportunity to escape to the Flinders and Outback region of South Australia was so appealing to me," she said.
“I've already made fantastic connections with SA Parks staff during previous wildfire deployments and at the World Ranger Congress. They've always been so welcoming and enthusiastic about showing me their corner of Australia that I couldn't resist applying for the Exchange.
When asked what she was most looking forward to about the Ranger Exchange Program, Michelle said she just wants to dive in head first.
“Whether it be building tracks, responding to fires or cleaning dunnies – I'm all in!

“I'm particularly excited to see how the Parkies do things differently over there. I can't wait to experience the contrasting flora and fauna, learn about the deep connections between Aboriginal culture and country, conservation works, and hopefully spot a Thorny Devil lizard (Moloch horridus) in the wild!
“I'm certain the Ranger Exchange Program will be transformative for both my professional development and personal growth. I'm excited to represent women in field-based careers and showcase the incredible opportunities available in remote work and field centres.
Michelle's eight-week adventure begins on Monday 6 October 2025.
