Winter in Tasmania offers some of the most striking and rewarding walking experiences, but the same conditions that make it special can also make it unpredictable and hazardous.
Short daylight hours, cold temperatures and rapidly changing weather mean even well-planned walks can become challenging. Taking a few extra steps to prepare can make all the difference.
Before you go:
Check the weather forecast and track conditions
Choose a walk suited to your experience and fitness
Plan for limited daylight and allow extra time
Tell someone your plans and expected return time
Pack for winter conditions, not just the distance, including warm, waterproof clothing, enough food and water, a torch, and reliable navigation.
Once you’re on track, use track logbooks where available.
Be prepared for conditions to change quickly. Tracks can be wet, muddy or icy, river levels may rise after rain, and mobile coverage is often unreliable.
With the right preparation, winter walking can be a great way to experience Tasmania’s parks and reserves, but it’s important to plan ahead and be ready for changing conditions.
