Overland Track reopening following bushfires

Find out more
Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) is pleased to advise that the Overland Track will be reopening to booked walkers from Monday 24 February 2025.

The track has been closed since 5 February 2025 due to a fire nearby Canning Peak, which has destroyed a hut, bridge and about one kilometre of track board walk.

The fires on the West Coast of Tasmania have burnt a combined area of more than 97,700 hectares.

PWS Incident Controller for West Coast complex Nic Deka said that following impact assessment and remediation works, the track has now been declared safe to reopen.

“Public safety always remains our priority, and we thank members of the public for their patience while the Overland Track has been closed,” Mr Deka said.

“We can assure you that the conditions are now safe from fire activity and anyone who has had to cancel the Overland Track walk during this closure period has been added to a priority list to rebook and will be provided a full refund.

“We look forward to seeing walkers on the Overland Track from tomorrow. However, please remember conditions can change quickly so keep up to date with the latest emergency information on TasAlert and closures on the alerts page on the PWS website.

“PWS, Tasmania Fire Service and Sustainable Timber Tasmania continue to respond to a complex of fires on the state’s West Coast and a total fire ban remains in place until 2am on Monday 24 February.”

There are still active bushfires in the vicinity and the public is advised to check the following websites for updated information.
