Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) advises that Maria Island will be closed to the public from 4.30pm Monday 21 August – 8am Friday 25 August 2023 for wildlife management operations.
Maria Island is unique in that the environment has been significantly altered by human use and the past introduction of wildlife species which need to be managed.
Annual scientific monitoring of wildlife populations is undertaken to track the health and welfare of these animals and help inform management strategies.
Animal welfare activities will be undertaken by skilled and experienced officers and supervised by an animal welfare officer.
This closure has been planned during the week to minimise the impact to park users.
