Hoo Hoo Hut replacement underway at Trevallyn

A new shelter at the Trevallyn Nature Recreation Area to replace what was formerly known as the Hoo Hoo Hut is on track to be built ahead of the festive season.

During severe storms between 31 August and 1 September 2024, the Hoo Hoo Hut BBQ shelter and facilities were damaged by a large fallen Eucalyptus tree. The tree completely destroyed the southern wing of the building and caused cracking of the supporting structural masonry chimney.

The new shelter will ensure that the popular BBQ facility in the Nature Recreation Area can be used once again, servicing visitors to the site as well as horse riders and other members of the community who access the Trevallyn Dam area.

The facility will also have improved features including accessible picnic tables, and the old wood fired BBQ will now have a gas system.

The original Hoo Hoo hut was constructed by volunteers from the Hoo Hoo Forest Industries Club in the early 1980s. The community club’s membership was made up of timber industry management and workers who volunteered labour and materials for the construction of community spaces.

The club’s logo was a black cat and many structures had a hidden cat image, the club is still in existence and remaining members have endorsed the replacement shelter.

Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) staff retained stones from the original fireplace and BBQ site which will be used in the new bench seating at the site. The project is funded through insurance with AJR Construct Pty Ltd contracted for the works.

Construction of the new shelter commenced on Friday 21 November 2025, with completion earmarked for Monday 22 December 2025, just in time for the festive season.

Members of the public are asked to observe the safety barriers and signage in the area while construction is underway.
