Finding Inspiration In Tassie’s Wild Places

Find out more
Tasmania's iconic Overland Track can be described as many things; exhilarating, life-changing, physically and emotionally demanding, but for artist Clare James, it's inspiring.

Fresh off an unforgettable adventure, Clare combined her love of the Tasmanian wilderness with her talent for creating art on a trip she recently completed with her best friend for the very first time.

“It was wonderful and challenging, hilarious and magnificent in every way possible. I can't wait to do it again," she said.

Clare's practice is deeply connected to nature, something she describes as woven through every part of her life.

“The books I read, podcasts I listen to, places I explore all contribute to my curiosity, fascination and wonder of Tasmania and the natural world.

While she works across different mediums, watercolour is her method of choice when on the move.

“I always use watercolours when I'm out and about as they are clean, lightweight and easy to work with wherever I am.

Hiking and painting have always gone hand in hand for Clare. She's been walking trails for nearly 30 years, painting along the way.

“I find it is a great way to really pay attention to the environment and ecosystems I'm in," she said.

“It is a lovely way to document a trip and is a nice activity to do after I arrive at a campsite and pitch my tent.

“Sometimes you have hours of daylight before bedtime, and painting is the perfect relaxation for me."

The Overland Track is a 65 kilometre, six-day trek which takes you through the heart of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, part of the magnificent Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
