Following a request for tender process, Tasmanian firm Xsquared Architects has been appointed to lead the design of the Freycinet Visitor Gateway.

The gateway will improve access to the Freycinet National Park, one of Tasmania's most iconic and frequently visited destinations. It will be located outside the national park near the township of Coles Bay.

This location was carefully chosen to reduce vehicle movement and congestion within Coles Bay and the Freycinet National Park, manage visitor numbers and promote sustainable access to the area.

Plans for the new visitor gateway include a carpark with electric vehicle charging facilities, visitor interface, amenities and bus shelter.

The design will focus on delivering low impact and sustainable infrastructure that streamlines visitor access to the national park and township. Implementation of a shuttle service is also being progressed and will commence operations after the delivery of the new Visitor Gateway site.

The project is supported through a $14 million election commitment by the State Government and $5.7 million from the Australian Government under its National Tourism Icons Program.

Plans for the Freycinet Visitor Gateway will be open for public consultation in 2025 and construction is anticipated to commence in 2025-26.
