Tasmanians and visitors alike can now access the historic mining town of Balfour via a new bridge in the Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area.
The Cassiterite Creek Bridge has been replaced, which was installed by North-West company Hazell Bros, cast in Ulverstone, and now has a lifespan of 100 years.
The new bridge provides ongoing secure access to the town, with a load capacity increase to meet modern standards. The replacement also provides ongoing access by Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) staff so they can maintain this area, which holds natural and historical value.
Within the Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area, repairs and upgrades to gravel shack node roads are also now complete.
These works featured new road culverts and re-gravelling, with updated safety and advisory signage planned to be installed in due course.
All these works have been funded through the Tasmanian Government's Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area and West Coast Off-Road Vehicle Project.
PWS acknowledges the importance of the Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area, which contains outstanding natural values and part of the Western Tasmania Aboriginal Cultural Landscape National Heritage Place.
Ensuring access and maintenance of roads in the region is important to enabling safe and sustainable enjoyment of this area now and into the future.
