This checklist is designed to be used in conjunction with a field guide.
Some of the birds commonly found in the Cradle Mountain region are listed below. The list is designed to be used in conjunction with a field guide to assist in identifying the birds. Alternatively, our app, Bird in the Hand, would be useful.
The list is divided into passerines and non-passerines and birds are listed with common names and scientific names. Passerines make the majority of birds throughout Tasmania. Noteable features of passerines are their toes (3 forward 1 back) allowing them to perch on even the smallest of branches. Passerines also have a well developed larynx and are known as ‘songbirds’.
